Guidelines for Easel Artists
Participating
as an Easel Artist is a great way to exhibit at Art Walk. Easel Artists
are located along the street in the Art Walk path of visitors and
for that reason enjoy greater visibility than artists exhibiting within
merchant venues—and often fare better. Creating artwork in
the presence of spectators is not only courageous, but it piques
curiosity and can be a great ice-breaker to encourage interaction
with those attending Art Walk.
Absolutely no vendors of anything other than fine
art, created by the participating artist will be allowed to be exhibited
at the event. Sausalito Art Walk is not a flea market, garage sale,
or swap meet. All artists must submit their work and be accepted
to show at the event. Sorry, no exceptions.
Most of us hate rules, but unfortunately they help to keep Art Walk
organized, safe and family-friendly. They also help to engender a cooperative
atmosphere among participants, visitors and neighbors. If you would
like to participate as an Easel Artist in Art Walk, please read the
following guidelines and others relating to merchants, musicians, and
visitors; it will help you to avoid any confusion.
NOTE: Easel Artists must submit work samples in advance for approval,
space assignment and the roster in order to participate in Art Walk – absolutely
no exceptions! By the way, Easel Artists also refers to sculptors,
potters, jewelers, etc., in addition to painters who create and display
their work outdoors during Sausalito's Art Walk.
· All Easel Artists are required to actively create artwork,
or some aspect of it, while participating in Art Walk—again,
no exceptions. Easel Artists are also encouraged to interact with
spectators and talk freely about their work, methods, processes,
etc. This type of exchange distinguishes Sausalito Art Walk from
other art walk events, and particularly delineates it from the more
typical experiences associated with viewing artwork in local galleries.
Visitors to Sausalito's Art Walk are more apt to be inquisitive about
Easel Artists and their work, and to engage in conversations that
might lead to professional opportunities or other art-related alliances.
Portfolios, promotional materials, and guest books may be useful
items for Easel Artists to bring to the event.
· Artwork displayed by Easel Artists does not have to be matted,
framed or hang-ready, which lends greater opportunity for portability
and display of works in progress.
· Whether sketching, painting, sculpting, hammering silver or
hand-pinching a clay pot, all Easel Artists are to be engaged in
some form of their art-making during the event.
· Easel Artist are not permitted to set up vending booths and
simply stand behind tables waiting for sales. It is contrary to the
philosophy of Sausalito's Art Walk to set up for the sole purpose
of vending, and we assure you that our goal is of much greater interest
to Art Walk visitors, too. On the other hand, if Easel Artists and
Event Musicians make meaningful connections that lead to gigs, sales,
educational opportunities, art alliances or other happy endings,
Art Walk has met one of its major goals!
· Easel Artists must furnish their own tables and will be allotted
minimal set up space (i.e., don't bring 12' tables and plan to block
the sidewalk). A card table plus an extra easel and/or display rack,
for instance, is appropriate.
· Sidewalk clearance is required: Easel Artists must leave 36
inches of clearance at all times to allow for wheel chair access,
and must show consideration to neighbors during the event. Entrances to
businesses in operation, residences and driveways shall never be
blocked, and respect must be shown at all times while guests of Sausalito in
this event.
· Alcohol and drugs are prohibited–again, absolutely no
exceptions! Violators jeopardize the event and Sausalito has zero
tolerance!
· All prospective Easel Artists must be accepted and assigned
a space prior to exhibiting at Art Walk. Those who set up without
assignment will be required to leave.
· Easel Artists shall submit several images of their work and,
upon notification of acceptance, will be assigned to a specific location
along the Art Walk on a first-come, first-served basis, with great
effort given to diversity of artwork along the path.
· Easel Artists and Event Musicians will often be set up in
close proximity–to their mutual advantage–and they must
show full cooperation by making slight location adjustments, where
necessary, and leaving clear access for pedestrians at all times.
Some of the Event Musicians may require access to electricity or
a greater area space, and Easel Artists are required to help with
adjustments for that purpose, as well.
· Art Walk is a community event and the laws of common decency
apply to all artwork displayed. In other words, if artwork or music
is not suitable for the eyes and ears of young children, then Easel
Artists and Event Musicians shall refrain from this type of art during
Art Walk.
We sincerely appreciate your respect and adherence to these guidelines,
and welcome your participation.
